Celebrations as Beccles Free School retains Good Ofsted result

Students and teachers at Beccles Free School are celebrating after retaining their Good result from Ofsted, following a recent inspection on 9 May. Ofsted inspectors gave high praise for the school’s ‘distinctive ethos, nurturing environment, curriculum tailored to the needs of its students, and wide-ranging enrichment programme.’

Beccles Free School, which is part of The Seckford Foundation Free Schools Trust, was placed in the top ten per cent nationally for exceptional student progress in GCSE results last year (August 2017), which Ofsted inspectors recognised in the report. Ofsted also highlighted the school’s strong leadership following a recent restructure where David Lees became joint Headteacher of both Beccles and Saxmundham Free Schools.

Students described their school as ‘a community built on cooperation and positivity where staff are caring and attentive’. Parents say the school provides ‘an atmosphere of constant inspiration that leads to happy, confident and fulfilled young people’.

The Ofsted report also praised the school’s friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and ‘cooperation, humour and respect’ between students and staff. This reflects the school’s ‘6 C’s to success’ ethos, which expects students to demonstrate Cooperation, Commitment, Confidence, Community, Challenge and Celebration.

Meal times are an important part of the school day at Beccles Free School, where students and staff dine together and enjoy a healthy selection of food choices. Inspectors recognised this in their report, describing meal times as a ‘wonderful social occasion’ with ‘exemplary’ student behaviour.

David Lees, Headteacher at Beccles Free School, said: “We are proud to maintain our Good Ofsted result, which is a real testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers and staff. We have high expectations of our students and we’re committed to providing a supportive, nurturing environment where everyone can learn and achieve.”

Beccles Free School, on Castle Hill, Beccles, opened in 2012 and was last inspected by Ofsted in 2014. Beccles, Saxmundham and Ixworth Free Schools are all part of The Seckford Foundation Free Schools Trust, which is a top-performing Multi-Academy Trust.
